Coatings Chemist - Technical Group Leader

  Description Located in Milford Development Center (MDC), OH, a North America Technical hub that supports PPG's global Packaging Coatings business. The Technical Group Leader I Packaging Coatings is a leadership position at MDC reporting to the Beverage Coatings Technical Manager, North America.  This role leads a team of chemists, engineers, and technicians in the Beverage Lab at MDC, in developing new products to achieve the team's objectives, including planning, organizing, and directing development activities.  The position is responsible for managing multiple technical projects in food contact coatings that address unmet needs in the Packaging Coatings market. Working closely with the Technical and Commercial Leadership, the leader is responsible for hiring and developing talent, driving execution, and ensuring beverage lab portfolio alignment with the global Packaging business. The Group Leader's greatest skill is having the ability to learn quickly, set team direction, and lead project execution, and effective communication.  Thus, the key objectives of the Group Leader include:  Primary Objectives The successful candidate that joins MDC and the Packaging Coatings business will be expected to accomplish the following goals in the first 12 months: Review and develop a complete understanding of PPG Packaging Coatings for Beverage products and their use within the first six months. Maintain and optimize the team project portfolio including interfacing with COMPASS stage gate process and Oracle Project Life-Cycle Analytics (OPLA). Lead the team in driving the execution of current portfolio. Work with PPG's Coatings Innovation Center (CIC) to deepen understanding of fundamental Beverage Packaging Coatings science and relate this to customer experience. Understand and interface with the Global market segment leaders and customers. Host customer visits. Present team progress to PPG leadership Coordinate innovation activities between PPG research labs Qualifications A successful candidate will possess a minimum of a master's level degree (Ph.D. is preferred) in Chemistry or related field, and + 4 years' experience in Coatings-Technical roles, with proven track record in technical leadership-leading at least a group of 5, technical achievements, and general business acumen and people management. As Packaging Coatings is truly global, managing across other regions will be critical to your success. Strong problem solving skills including demonstrable market and customer awareness are essential. Also important is the ability to lead and engage a team of about 12 people and interface effectively with all levels and functions of the organization. Experience and skills of working effectively in a matrixed organization will help in adapting to this job. Knowledge in managing technical projects in a global market environment is required. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
